Who makes KidMap.
KidMap is made by Lukas, a father in Vilnius, together with the families who fill the map in. It is published by MB „Finansų dirbtuvės“.
KidMap started from two things at once: with small children, the question "where do we go now" came up every day, and the answer already existed, scattered across datasets that nobody had put in front of parents.
How it started.
With young children, a day is planned in half hours. A new playground can be perfect or useless: climbing frames built for eight-year-olds when yours is two, no shade at midday in July, no toilet within a kilometre. A map does not tell you any of that, so you walk there on a hunch, and often walk back.
Meanwhile, the data was there. OpenStreetMap volunteers had already mapped hundreds of thousands of playgrounds across Europe. The City of Vilnius publishes its own playground register, with photos, areas and age groups. All of it sitting in different places, and none of it reachable at the moment a parent needs it: standing outside, holding a small hand.
KidMap puts it on one map and adds the part the data never had: what parents found when they actually went there.
What KidMap does.
The app holds 730,721 playgrounds in 56 countries and territories. You can filter the map by 17 kinds of equipment, from baby swings to a fence, shade and a toilet. You see photos, get directions, save favourites and mark the ones you have visited. The app speaks 31 languages.
You can browse the map without an account. The core is free. Premium removes ads and adds conveniences, but the map itself is not behind a paywall and will not be.
What KidMap does not do.
We do not inspect playgrounds and we do not judge whether one is safe, maintained or open. The data shows what was recorded at some point, not the state of the equipment today. Whether a playground suits your child is your call, made with your own eyes.
Why families do the rest.
Most playgrounds in open map data have a location and nothing else. Whether there is a sandbox, a fence or shade is marked by the parents who were there. Same with photos. One visit, a few seconds, and the next family knows what to expect.
